slavic names of star wars characters?
Hello there!
I am not sure if you are asking me about already existent characters in the SW universe, anon, where I can answer that the only character that comes to my mind with sort-of-a-slavic name is Slavin, an Imperial officer from Rebels, or if you mean my suggestion of slavic names for Star Wars characters...
If it's the latter, I'd suggest these:
Female Names
Bisera
Brana
Darina
Elka
Jasna
Ivelina
Lada
Lara
Mila
Nadia
Nevena
Vera
Zlata
Zora
Zoriana
Male Names
Bohdan
Bronimir
Dobroslav
Darko
Goran
Hviezdoslav
Lech
Mladen
Nenad
Orlin
Prodan
Radoslav
Strogbor
Vlad
Some of these male names have a female version by adding -a, like Bohdana, Dobroslava, Radoslava...
Those are just some names that I feel are good to use for SW characters. I purposefully omitted all the names with letters like "ž", "š", "č, "ř" and similar variants in other Slavic languages.

etz hayyim (“tree of life”) synagogue in chania, crete, greece. the building dates to the 14th-15th centuries, and was originally a venetian catholic church. it was acquired by chania's jewish community and converted into a synagogue in the late 17th century. chania's jews were deported due to the holocaust in 1944, after which the building remained abandoned until restoration in the 1990s.
romaniote jews are the oldest jewish community in europe and one of the oldest in the world, thought to have lived in and around present day greece since before 70 ce. they have their own liturgy that is unrelated to the more commonly used european ones (ashkenazic and sephardic).
#greece#architecture#interior#worship#jewish#romaniote#old & new#my posts#for all u Westerners 'rom' = constantinople referring to itself as the roman empire#so rome/italy is like 'west roman' constantinople/greece/anatolia is like 'east roman'#in the west its called 'byzantine' from 'byzantium' (proto-constantinople)#also it insinuates w roman empire was the 'real' roman empire (despite east lasting 1000 years longer)#in most mediterranean & w asian languages greece/greek is 'yunan/yawan/yavan' (from ionians) or 'rum/rom' (from roman)#in actual greek it's 'hellas'/'ellas' (from hellenic)#in georgian it's 'saberdzneti' for some reason but they also have their own names for a bunch of places#'greece' comes from the latin name 'graecia'#in a lot of slavic languages it's some variation of 'greece'. weird considering most were never/hardly under latin influence#if you think this is a lot just wait until u hear about the all the names for armenia#but yeah these guys were also in a lot of the balkans. if you're from the balkans and jewish you MAY have romaniote ancestry#(at least more recent romaniote ancestry than all other european jews)#not a guarantee though especially if you're ashkenazi#theres like. other jewish groups in europe that predated ashkenazi migration#most of them just got absorbed into the ashkenazi population

While Laika was the name popularized around the world, she had many nicknames including Kudryavka (Russian for Little Curly), Zhuchka (Little Bug), and Limonchik (Little Lemon).
#very much inspired by TheVeryWorstThing’s ‘angel’ REMwolf#I drew this with my puppy curled up on me and I DEFINITELY didn’t cry at all#I just… I know she’s Shelly Duval but I always read Anya as being Slavic#plus Curly’s hair isn’t Curly so what’s the name orign#and I had to get sappy about my lovely little Laika#I had to.#my art#anya mouthwashing#mouthwashing spoilers#Mouthwashing#laika

I don’t know if this has already been asked, but do your characters have deeper meaning behind their names? Or you just name them based on vibes?
I just name them using names i like! Meaning wise they almost never fit. That being said some names are a bit more deliberate; Beatrycze for example is an uncommon name and i chose it specifically because of how rare and distinctive it is (its one of the very few girls names that dont end with "a") as Tryczs chosen name. It fits her more eccentric personality a lot
#naming chidren in poland has very clear rules and until fairly recently used to be much more restrictive; naming girls with names that dont#end with a was simply not possible in vast majority of cases#Lenas family would probably have to fight or just get lucky to name her Jelena too; named her after my cousin#at that time polish names had to be polish and jelena is polonisation of an east slavic name. which mine is too and it went through thanks#to my amazing luck#ask :)#duch na strychu

Those of you who are Polish or linguistically similar (Czech, idk what more) probably noticed, but Boromir would be a perfectly legit Medieval Polish (Slavic in general?) name, meaning more or less "peace in the forest". Faramir is a bit trickier and needs some anachronism, but "fara" is a type of a church, so "peace in the church", or to make it more setting-appropriate, "peace in the hall".
Let's translate those back to Sindarin using that one instruction for name-making. So, as the wise the dictionary says:
forest = taur hall = There's nothing I can find in sindarin, for etymological reasons let's go with gobel which is walled town / house, makes sense in the context peace = îdh
Surprisingly there's nothing to tweak according to the instruction, so Taurídh and his younger brother Gobelídh (both sound so dumb…)
…Now I need a fic where Boromir and Faramir go on a stealth mission using those as their fake names.
#still better than Finrod#silm#silm crack#tolkien languages#tolkien linguistics#polish#silm fic ideas#ok technically#lotr fic ideas#lotr#i know those names are from silm technically#but anyway#boromir#faramir#one day I need to translate some actual old Slavic names into Sindarin#Mirosław and such#it will be hilarious

An idea that has the potential to be very culturally insensitive if handled wrong but possibly quite fun if done right is a Bionicle Human AU where everyone's ethnicity/cultural background is determined by the origin of their names. Naturally this would make most of the early characters Maori or Rotuman, but from there it would branch out into gems such as Welsh Ehrye, German Orkahm, either British or French Dume, and my personal favourite, all of the Glatorian and Agori being time-displaced Romans, with the exception of Kiina, who is a Celt who got dragged along for the ride and is deeply unhappy about it.
#bionicle#bonkle#i've been naming a lot of bonk ocs lately and thought of this while browsing etymology#other winners include:#no one knows where the piraka are from#most matoran and toa introduced in 2006/2007 are one flavour or another of slavic#and at least half the barraki and several makuta are englishmen#make of that what you will

anyway new scenario i am cherishing as a treat for me is that the same night juno was using his coping skills to not drink away his feelings, nureyev got scooped at the spaceport and then subsequently dropped off at the lighthouse by ruby, and in the process of name reveal/family reunion/etc he lets buddy and vespa get him drunk (in what is probably the first time he's been actually intoxicated in lo these twenty odd years)
crucial elements: vespa is now capable of getting drunk, and buddy remains not capable of getting drunk, i don't think nureyev has worked his way up to the mortifying ordeal of both of them being sober while he is drunk and it's already mortifying enough that buddy's gonna interrogate him about his feelings which he is now working on acknowledging that he has. vespa is a.) in a secure and relaxed enough frame of mind to tolerate being drunk around nureyev, largely bc b.) buddy is sober and has the upper hand if they're actually wrong about him even now, c.) 'i don't wanna deal with your shit sober anyway'. and furthermore both of them are only going to be able to tolerate being impaired at all knowing that at least one person in the room has Got This because they are both thinking about ambushes at all times
(it takes him the entire rest of the next day to get to hyperion city and feeling presentable enough to go see juno bc his ass is NOT used to having a hangover)
#idk the chiasmus of it compels me#also! apparently there is another slavic diminutive 'petka' that has shades of (informal/perjorative/affectionate-derogatory)#and i think that would be really funny#after vespa manages to stop giving him grief about using his real first name#if she breaks that out specifically to give him psychic damage#petrushka aurinkovich nureyev#the penumbra podcast#i love my gay space crimes family#tpp spoilers#alcohol#edit i just confused the hell out of my brain bc i read Lo these twenty years as Io like the moon#perils of. that specific confluence apparently
